Technology > Private Land Mobile Radio (PLMR)
Private Land Mobile Radio, for some organizations, is the forgotten child of the IT world. After all, why would you need mobile radio with cellular telephone so inexpensive? Those in the know read the previous sentence and laugh. Emergency and public services, construction companies, utilities, and military personnel know the value of a private system. Unlike a cellular system, Mobile Radio provides:
- Reserve talk channels - During times of high use, a cellular tower is not able to support all the callers who are attempting to make a call. There is no way to guarantee you will be able to communicate when you want, without Mobile Radio.
- Broadcast capability - cellular systems are designed for communication between two devices. Mobile Radio always has the ability to communicate from one device to many.
- Coverage - The coverage of a mobile radio system can be controlled. Organizations are able to design systems to give them coverage inside buildings, in sparsely populated areas, and in densely populated areas (where cellular channels would be tied up during a major event).
- Availability - System availability can be controlled. Cellular systems generally do not have generators and battery backups.
Organizations with mobile radio systems need to plan well. Especially those who will be affected by the FCC narrowband ruling. Innovative Thinking can help your organization by analyzing system reliability, performing coverage studies, and managing license applications and renewals.
